My One True Love

In the Beginning

sunny 7 °C

Growing up in a really multi-cultural area, where a single white female was the minority, I couldn't help but be moulded by all the cultures surrounding me. Some of my first words were in Tamil, and dating a white guy was never an option, let alone a preference. Some people think that when you grow up in a small community you crave the unknown which results in a severe travel bug. However, growing up in a suburb of Toronto, with millions of people who look nothing like me, sparked an addiction I can't really describe. Stemming from very traditional parents who grew up with virtually nothing, travelling for experience was never a priority, rather it was a privilege that we'd be graced with every once in a while, visiting surrounding areas such as Florida or Myrtle Beach.

As i grew older, I soon realized that I absolutely love being the minority. My parents are from Newfoundland, where the only person of non-European descent is the local Chinese restaurant owners. I quickly learned that I could not live in a place where I’m not learning something new every day. In Toronto, as you travel from block to block you experience countries from all corners of the earth. A two minute drive from little Jamaica lies Korea town and five minutes from there it's as if you're Greek Island hopping.

I've been immersed in travel since my post secondary education began, and now as I get my degree in Tourism Management, my love for travel is back with vengeance.
